I know some churches may not be able to afford a security system, but I will say its worth saving for. Whether you have a church security system already, are thinking about getting one, or see no need for one, God is always our first line of defense.

That being said, here are four reasons I believe a church should have a security system:

Peace of Mind

Our church has a security system and I can speak personally about the added security and peace of mind it gives. No Pastor, no matter how dedicated, will spend 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week, 365 days out the year at church. He or she will eventually go home and have to leave hundreds if not thousands of dollars of equipment unprotected.

We also added a security camera system which was under $300. We used to have people who would come and turn around in our gravel driveway. They would spin their tires and make donuts in our parking lot. After we put up cameras all that ceased. For not much money you can have access via the Internet to watch your church from home 24 hrs a day if desired.

Protect Your Investments

I know of two churches that have been broken into. One was just the front door that was broken in, but the second actually had items stolen. Hundreds of dollars of equipment gone in a moment. And these two churches believe in God just like we all do. No one knows why bad things happen to good people.

The first church I spoke about had a security system; maybe that was the reason the thieves were thwarted in their endeavors. The church only had to replace front glass. The second one with no church security had actual items stolen; they have yet to recover the stolen items. They are now putting a security system in their church budget.

Alerting the Authorities

There’s an old saying: locks only keep good people out. If criminals want to gain access, there is really nothing we can do beyond trusting in God to watch over and give His angels charge over the building and all of its contents. Installing a security system can at last alert the police or fire department and get them there as soon as possible.

Be a Good Steward

A good steward is a person who manages another’s property or financial affairs; one who administers anything as the agent of others. A steward is a person who has charge of the household of another.

We as Pastors and board members of churches have a responsibility to God and the people. We must make sure that the money people give to purchase church equipment, as well as all other church purchases, is watched over with the utmost care and prayer.
