According to this blog post, 83 percent of Americans have a social media account. As of the end of 2016, 2.8 billion people use social media. Almost everyone uses social media these days. I’ll be answering a question that you yourself may have asked: If Jesus were on Earth today, would He use social media?

Let me start out by saying, there’s no way for me to know 100 percent whether or not Jesus would have social media. In order to answer this question, I’m going to look at what exactly social media is. What is the point of social media?

The Selfie Life

We post selfies because we want everyone to look at us and see how pretty or handsome we are. That’s kind of self-centered. Jesus is anything but self-centered. 1 John 4:8 says, “…God is love.” 1 Corinthians 13:5 says, “…it [love] is not self-seeking…” According to dictionary.com, some synonyms of self-seeking include selfish, self-centered, and self-absorbed. So if God is love and love is not selfish, then that means Jesus wouldn’t participate in selfish activities such as taking selfies and posting them on social media.

Another reason some people may post pictures is to make others jealous. They boast about their brand new car or their expensive designer clothes. Boasting is a sin. “…all the evildoers boast.” Psalm 94:4. But Jesus would never do that. He isn’t someone who would show off His riches and glory and brag about it on social media.

Encouraging Others

Although social media can be used negatively, there are some positive aspects of it. Encouragement is so important in our walk with Christ. “Therefore encourage one another and build one another up…” 1 Thessalonians 5:11. Some people use their social media platform to uplift and encourage others. If Jesus had social media, He’d definitely be one of those people. I believe that He’d use His account to post encouragement and scripture.

Another positive aspect of social media is the sharing of useful or positive information. We are commanded to think about positive things. “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” Philippians 4:8. Social media can be used for sharing important information and promoting positive messages.

What Would Jesus Tweet?

Since we are supposed to follow Christ’s example, “Therefore be imitators of God…” Ephesians 5:1, we should also be using social media in a Christ-like manner. Before you post something on social media, ask yourself “would Jesus post this?” I have nothing against posting a selfie every now and then, I post selfies on my own Instagram page. But we should never post for the sole purpose of making others jealous or to say, “Hey, look at me!” I encourage you to start posting encouragement and positivity to your social media accounts rather than selfish posts.

Looking at the information I just presented you with, you may have already made your decision about whether or not Jesus would use social media if He was on earth. The conclusion I came to is that Jesus would use social media. But He wouldn’t use it in the same way many of us use it. He wouldn’t use it for His own selfish intentions. He wouldn’t use it to uplift Himself or to make others feel jealous. He’d use it to uplift and encourage others. This is just my opinion, let me know what you think in the comments!
