Over the years there have been an abundance of Biblical epics shot. Some incredibly good, others leave much to be desire. Every year different channels throw out whatever Hollywood Easter offering they can find to the masses and expect that to be sufficient viewing. But out of this pantheon of film which Easter pictures are the best of the best? In honor of the upcoming Easter weekend we proudly present to you the list of the top 5 Easter flicks that you must not miss this year.
This one is an oldie but a goodie. Anthony Quinn takes the lead as Barrabas, the man freed in the place of Jesus by Pilate. It is a tough story to watch and while not supported scripturally presents a believable account of a man who struggles with his salvation both in worldly and heavenly terms and comes to discover what it means to be given life through Christ’s sacrifice! To sweeten the deal this one is being redone in the near future so it will give you a feel for what to expect in the remake!
#4 The Robe
This one is much like Barabbas is not scripturally founded but tells a what-if tale with an Easter tie in. The Robe tells the story of the Centurion who wins Christ’s Robe and the subsequent journey that the realization of who Christ is takes him on. Stellar acting and well shot the Robe is a must see for the Easter season. It can be difficult to find as it is getting older but if you can get your hands on it, it is definitely worth the watch.
Ben-Hur is the most likely one to see on the television this Easter season. Heston’s portrayal of a Jewish man plagued by Rome and who overcomes to aspire to greatness is a common Easter tale. While the story only shows brief cameos of Christ this film was the pinnacle of epics in its day and stands as one of the greatest films of all time. If you haven’t seen it before prepare yourself for a marathon 3 hour film!
#2 Prince of Egypt
This one may seem an odd selection. Dreamworks portrayal of the Moses tale does not often make it onto the Easter lists. However, as Passover is upon us and the amazing story of deliverance is merely a foreshadow of Christ’s deliverance and sacrifice this one gives some great perspective on why the sacrifice of Christ allows death to pass us over! Stellar soundtrack and fantastic animation deliver a great watch for the whole family.
#1 Passion of the Christ
I don’t think it is possible to make an Easter list for the best films without Mel Gibson’s cinematic offering topping the list. His honest and scriptural portrayal of the passion tale is gruesome and inspiring all at the same time. Watch with care as the R rating is well warranted as the torture and crucifixion of Christ is extremely violent but overall this movie shares a compelling story that is worth watching over and over again!
So there it is the Top 5! What Easter flick is your favorite? What would you have added to the list?
